Ride out to Bosherston, the lily ponds and beyond to Broad Haven (south) beach for a paddle.
The Lily ponds at Bosherston form part of the Stackpole estate, situated on the south-eastern side of the Castlemartin Peninsula. The ponds were formed in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Earls Cawdor. As part of the grand scheme three limestone valleys were dammed and flooded, and an eight arch bridge spans one of the ponds. As well as lilies, the ponds are a natural habitat for otters, eels, pike, tench and roach with waterfowl keeping an eye out for lunch. And for the birdies amongst you it’s one of the few places you will see choughs, the distinguished crows with red beak and legs.
The plan is to pootle down to Bosherston where we’ll park and take the short walk alongside the ponds to Broad Haven (south) beach, about ½ mile beyond. Those who don’t fancy the walk can continue on the road through Bosherston to the beach cliff-top car park and meet up with the rest of us at the bottom of the steps down to the beach.
Broad Haven is, I think, one of the best beaches on the west coast and probably ranks amongst the top five nationally; an enclosed bay of golden sand with clear seas rolling in, with the renowned Barafundle Bay just a hop along the coast.
Before we leave it’s a must to have cream teas back at the old tearoom in Bosherston; some of you will remember the lovely old dear that bakes all the cakes and scones (don’t know who milks the cow tho’)
If you’re up for it (and you're not running the London Marathon), meet at Hagan's cafe for a depart @ 10:30. This is a relatively short run and will be at an easy pace using the drop off system. It’s only 80+ miles there and back so a full tank at the start should see you through.
I’ve booked the weather so don’t forget to pack the sun screen and swimwear (and a brolly just in case!). I’ll bring the Frisbee.
